10 things to do with a lunch break that are not your phone.

10 things to do with a lunch break that are not your phone.

Here is the thing almost nobody notices about a lunch break.

It is the only reliable gap most people get in a day. Everything else moves. This one is more or less fixed, more or less yours, and it comes round every single working day whether you use it or not.

And almost everyone fills it with exactly the same input they have had all morning. A screen, held slightly closer.

So you get a break from working, and no break at all from the day.

I am not going to tell you to meditate at your desk

I have read that article. You have read that article. Nobody is doing it.

What follows takes somewhere between 2 and 20 minutes, none of it requires privacy, and none of it requires you to tell a colleague that you are doing anything.

Pick 1. Not all 10. The list being long is not an instruction.

The 10

1. Eat somewhere that is not your desk. Even the stairwell. The point is that your body gets a different room, which is how it knows something has changed.

2. Get outside for 10 minutes. Daylight at midday is the single most useful thing on this list and the one you will have the best excuse not to do.

3. Look at something far away. Out of a window, down a street, at a roof. Your eyes have been at the same distance since 9am and so, in a way, has the rest of you.

4. Box breathing, 2 rounds. In for 4, hold 4, out for 4, hold 4. Under 2 minutes. You can do it at a desk and nobody can tell.

5. Put the phone in a drawer. Not face down on the table. In a drawer, or a bag, or another room. Face down still counts as present.

6. Walk without headphones once a week. Not every day. But once, go without, and notice how loud it is in there. That is the information.

7. Water before the second coffee. The afternoon slump is at least partly a hydration problem and almost everyone treats it as a caffeine problem.

8. Write down the 1 thing that is actually bothering you. Not a to-do list. The thing. It does not need solving, it needs to stop circling, and the way to stop a thought circling is to put it somewhere.

9. Touch the thing in your pocket. If you carry a crystal, this is what it is for. A small physical cue, once in the middle of the day, that you had decided to look after yourself this morning.

10. Do not solve anything. This is the one that makes the other 9 work. A lunch break spent quietly problem solving is not a break, it is unpaid overtime with a sandwich.

What people try first, and why it does not hold

The usual version is to block out an hour in the calendar and call it a proper lunch, and it survives about 9 days.

It fails because it is too big. An hour is a thing to protect, and in a bad week it is the first thing to go.

2 minutes of breathing and a walk round the block is not a thing to protect. It is too small to cancel. That is its whole advantage.

What to notice

How you are at 3pm.

Not at 1.30, when you have just come back in and everything feels briefly manageable. At 3, which is when the day usually tells you the truth.

If 3pm is different, the break worked. If it is identical, you probably spent it on your phone, which is fine, and tomorrow is another one.

The honest bit

You will do this for about 4 days and then stop.

Everybody does. The trick is not more discipline, it is picking the 1 that is easiest for you specifically and letting the other 9 go. Mine is getting outside. Yours might be the drawer.

1 of them, most days, is worth more than all 10 for a fortnight.
