Turns out I'm the pattern. We move.

Turns out I'm the pattern. We move.

I have done the breathwork. I have done the somatic sessions. I have sat in a cacao ceremony in a yurt in Glastonbury and cried with 12 strangers while someone played a singing bowl at a frequency that apparently rearranged my DNA.

Then I went home. And someone wanted to know what was for dinner.

Babe. I just had a kundalini awakening in the Tesco car park.

This is the gap nobody talks about. Between who you're becoming and whoever still needs feeding.

Nobody warns you that the inner work does not come with a day off. You can have the most significant afternoon of your adult life and still be the person who knows where the charger is.

And there is no ceremony for the Tuesday after. That is where it either becomes real or quietly does not.

The harder thing I've had to sit with: I kept clearing the energy, clearing the space, clearing other people. And the same dynamic kept appearing. Different face. Same feeling.

That took me a long time to see, and I want to say why, because I do not think I am unusual.

Clearing outside yourself is enormously satisfying. It is visible. You can do it on a Sunday and look at the result.

It also puts the problem somewhere you are not. Which is restful, briefly, and it means nothing has to change about you.

So you clear a situation and the feeling goes, and 4 months later there is a new situation with the identical feeling in it, and you clear that one too.

The tell is the repetition. Not that bad things keep happening, because they happen to everybody. That the same specific feeling keeps arriving, in situations that have nothing else in common.

Different job, same resentment. Different person, same particular loneliness. That is not luck running out. That is something you are bringing.

I have cleared every chakra. I have cleared every man. Turns out I'm the pattern.

We move.

I should say what I do not mean by that, because this sentence can go somewhere unkind very fast.

Being the pattern does not mean it was your fault. It does not mean you caused what was done to you. Those are different things and conflating them is how people end up carrying blame for somebody else's behaviour.

What it means is narrower and more useful. The part of this that repeats is the part that travels with you, and that is also the only part you have any say over.

The way you read a silence. What you assume somebody means. Who you are drawn to and how quickly. What you are prepared to put up with before you say anything, and how long you leave it.

None of that is a flaw. It is almost always something that was once the correct response to an actual situation, and it stayed on after the situation ended.

This is actually the most hopeful thing I've ever realised. Because if I'm the pattern, I'm also the solution. The work isn't out there. It never was. Understanding that, in your body not just your head, is the moment things actually start to shift.

In your body not just your head is doing a lot of work in that sentence, so let me be plain about the difference.

In your head, you can explain your pattern beautifully. You can name it, trace it, say which part of your life it came from. And then do it again on Thursday.

Knowing has never stopped anybody. If it did, none of us would need any of this.

In your body is different. It is the half second where you notice the pull before you follow it. The familiar feeling arrives, you clock it as familiar, and that recognition is just long enough to do something other than the usual thing.

That half second is the whole of it. It is not insight, it is timing.

And it is unglamorous to build. You do not get it by understanding more. You get it by being in your body often enough that you can feel a thing starting, which is why all the practices are practices and not ideas.

What people tend to notice first is not that the pattern stops. It is that they see it while it is happening rather than 3 weeks later. That is the actual milestone and it feels like almost nothing at the time.

Then, later, that something which would have taken 6 months to work through takes an afternoon. Same pattern. Caught earlier.

If you want somewhere to start with your own, do not start with the pattern. Start with the feeling.

Pick the feeling you are most tired of having. Not the worst thing that has happened to you. The one that keeps turning up.

Then list where it has been, without explaining any of it. Just the situations. 4 or 5 is plenty.

What you are looking for is not a cause. It is the common ingredient, and it is usually embarrassingly ordinary. A particular kind of person. A particular moment in a conversation. The point at which you go quiet.

You are not trying to solve it. You are trying to recognise it 10 seconds earlier than you did last time.

We move. Slowly, mostly, and with somebody still asking about dinner.
