What narcissistic abuse actually does to your inner guidance system.

What narcissistic abuse actually does to your inner guidance system.

Gaslighting does not just confuse your thinking. It dismantles your ability to trust your own body. The signals that used to tell you something is wrong, the tightening in your chest, the instinct to leave the room, the quiet voice that says this is not right, those signals get systematically overridden until you cannot hear them at all.

How a signal gets overridden

Not all at once, and never by being argued with directly.

It happens in small corrections. You say you felt uncomfortable and you are told you are being dramatic. You remember a conversation one way and you are told, calmly and with apparent patience, that it did not happen like that.

Each correction on its own is survivable. What they do together is train you to check your reading of a room against somebody else's before you act on it.

And that habit is clever, because it keeps you safe in the situation you are in. The cost only shows up later, when you are out, and you no longer have a first opinion of your own.

What remains is hypervigilance. Freeze. Fawn. A body permanently scanning for threat, even years after the relationship has ended. What narcissistic abuse leaves behind is not a mindset problem. It is an injury.

What that looks like on an ordinary day

Knowing the mood of the house from the sound of the front door.

Reading a 1 line email 5 times to work out whether somebody is annoyed with you.

Saying sorry as an opening word, out of habit, for things that have not happened.

Agreeing in the moment and then feeling it in your stomach on the way home.

Being tired at 4 in the afternoon in a way that makes no sense against what you have actually done, which is what it costs to run that much background scanning all day.

Those are not personality traits and they are not oversensitivity. They are a skill set that was necessary once and is now wildly over qualified for a normal Tuesday.

This is why talk therapy alone often is not enough. You can understand what happened intellectually and still feel the activation in your body every time you hear a particular tone of voice or walk into a room with a certain energy.

Why understanding is not the same as change

Because the understanding happens in the part of you that was never the problem.

You can be completely clear about what was done to you, able to name every mechanism, and still find your chest tightening when somebody uses a particular phrase. The clarity does not get down to where the reaction lives.

That is not a sign you have not understood it well enough. More understanding will not reach further. It is simply the wrong instrument for that depth.

This work happens at the level where the damage actually lives. In the body. In the automatic responses. In the patterns that were rewired by someone who needed you to doubt yourself.

What people try first, and why it does not hold

Most people try harder. Deciding to trust themselves, telling themselves they are fine, pushing through the reaction and hoping repetition dulls it.

That does not hold because trust is not a position you adopt. It is a thing that gets rebuilt out of evidence, and the evidence has to be your own.

The second thing people try is distance. Necessary, often, and still not sufficient, because the scanning came with you and does not know the relationship has ended.

The third is explaining it to the person who did it. I would not spend your energy there. The mechanism that did this is not available to that conversation.

What helps is slower and far less dramatic. Very small occasions where you notice something, do not check it with anybody, and turn out to have been right.

What rebuilding actually feels like

Unremarkable, mostly, which is why people miss it happening.

You disagree with somebody out loud and nothing bad happens. You send the message without rewriting it 6 times. You decide you do not want to go to a thing and do not construct a reason.

You notice you have not thought about them since Tuesday.

It is not linear, either. There will be a week that feels like going backwards, usually set off by something very ordinary, and that is not a relapse. A system letting go of something is rarely tidy.

And it sits alongside the other support you may need rather than instead of it. If you are still in it, or there is any question of your safety, that comes first and it is a different conversation from this one.

I work with this from lived experience. Not as a clinical observer. As someone who rebuilt her own inner guidance system from the ground up.

The body always speaks first, are you listening?

Turns out I'm the pattern. We move.

If that sounds like your own body, the one to ones run on Tuesday mornings and we start with whatever is going on for you. Email anna@annalouoflondon.com or message me on WhatsApp at https://wa.me/447738470156 and we will find a time.
