Every piece of jewellery I make has a meaning. Not because I decided to make it meaningful, but because the women who wear it made it so. They told me what it was for. I listened, and made more of what they needed.
Symbolic jewellery is one of the oldest spiritual practices in the world. Amulets, talismans, sacred objects worn on the body, these exist across every culture in every era because humans have always understood that what we carry against our skin carries something back.
Why an object works at all
The honest explanation is not mystical. It is that a small object you can touch sits outside your own head.
Everything you decide in the morning lives in your thoughts, where it is easily argued with by lunchtime. An object does not argue. It is on your collarbone whether you are in the mood for it or not.
So what you are really doing when you choose a piece deliberately is leaving yourself a note in a place you cannot avoid reading.
That is why the moment of choosing matters more than the piece. The piece is just where the decision went to live.
How I actually choose, on an ordinary morning
The way I choose what to wear is simple. I look at what the day is asking for and I reach for the piece that corresponds. Moonstone when I need my intuition. Lapis Lazuli before a conversation where I need to speak my truth. The Exhale Necklace when I have been holding too much.
It takes about 20 seconds and it happens standing up, usually with 1 shoe on.
The question underneath it is not what do I want to look like. It is what is this day going to ask of me, and what do I need to remember while it does.
Some days the answer is obvious. There is a conversation in the diary you have been putting off, so you reach for the thing that reminds you to say the true version.
Some days there is nothing in the diary at all and the answer is quieter. You reach for the thing that reminds you that you are allowed to be unremarkable for 1 day.
In crystal tradition each stone carries its own associations, and plenty of people find those a useful shorthand. But you do not need to learn a chart to do this. You need to know what you are walking into.
What people try first, and why it does not hold
The first thing most people try is buying the piece everybody else is wearing. It arrives, it is lovely, and it means nothing, because somebody else chose it.
The second thing people try is saving it. The good piece goes in the drawer for an occasion that keeps not arriving, and 2 years later it is still in the drawer with the tissue paper.
Saving it is the part I would gently argue with. An ordinary Tuesday is exactly the day you need reminding of something. Weddings look after themselves.
The third thing is wearing the same piece every day without thinking, which is fine, and is also how a meaningful object quietly becomes furniture.
None of those are mistakes. They are just what happens when the choosing stops and the habit takes over.
A way back into it
If this has gone automatic for you, try 1 week of choosing on purpose.
Open the drawer. Before you touch anything, say what the day needs. Steadiness. Honesty. Softness. Nerve.
Then pick the piece you associate with that, and notice whether your hand goes somewhere your mind had not suggested. It often does.
At the end of the day, take it off deliberately rather than at the sink with your other hand full. That 5 seconds is the other half of the practice.
By about day 4 most people find they already know which piece it is going to be before they open the drawer, which is the point. You are not learning about jewellery. You are learning to read your own day before it starts.
What this is not
The piece does not do the work. You do. But the right piece, chosen consciously, is a small physical act of self-knowledge. And those small acts, done consistently, are how you stay connected to yourself.
It will not fix a situation, and nothing worn on a chain has ever made a difficult conversation easy. What it does is hold a decision steady for 12 hours while you go and have the conversation anyway.
And if a piece stops meaning anything, let it stop. Meaning is not a permanent property of an object. It moves on, and you are allowed to retire a piece the way you retire a coat.
What to notice
Notice which piece you reach for when you are tired, because that is the one your body trusts.
Notice which one you put on and then take off again. Something in you has already decided it is the wrong day for it.
Notice the pieces you never wear and have not been able to give away. Those are usually about a person rather than a day.
And notice the days you do not want to choose at all. That is worth knowing too. It is usually the week you most need the 20 seconds.
Which piece does your day need today?
